You Chose...Wisely

Wait, what just happened?

Warner Wolf, who since December has been doing sports reports for both 1050 ESPN and Don Imus on WABC, has left 1050 on weekday mornings effective Monday after being asked by ESPN to choose between the jobs...

1050 ESPN program director Aaron Spielberg said Friday the decision was made in the wake of on-air remarks by Imus Thursday in which he ripped the ESPN morning show, "Mike and Mike," in terms ESPN believed crossed a line from legitimate criticism to "off-color" personal attacks.

oh, the poor cry-babies at ESPN...

I-Man at 68 is still TOTALLY powerful...amazing.

What with the 'FAN losing Imus and possibly Fatso and Fruit Loops, ESPN has a chance to become a major sports radio station in NY.

Moves like this don't exactly help.

As far as Imus' comments re: "Mike and Mike" ..... I watch them frequently (don't have RFD yet) and they're not bad. They beat the crapola outta Boomer and Carton, that's for damn well sure.

If you had ESPN and a thick-skinned program director...YOU LOST!!!!

In all seriousness, what did he actually say? The article says that he called them, quote, a "****". What's a four-letter word that you can say on the radio but can't say in Newsday?

Oh, Imus was just fooling around...he was 'upset' at Warner for something, so he went off on ESPN and 'The 'Fan just to show Warner how much Sports sucked and how much Sports radio in NY sucked..

He later said he was just fooling around...some people just have no sense of humor...

It was during Warner's regular sports report at about 15 past either 7 or 8AM Thursday, CG...

I think the offending moment was when Imus referred to Mike Greenburg - the metrosexual one - as a "pussy". He also called Mike Golic - the ex-jock - a "fathead".

And, it seems he has the same opinion of B&C as I do .... at one point he stated that "they (Mike and Mike)suck - not as much as Boomer, but close"

(If you'd like to hear the "offending" bit, it's posted in the Imus newsgroup.)

Victory is ours! We no longer have to hear the I-Man stumble over that dreadful lie: "From 1050 ESPN, New York's sports leader..." anymore!

Now if only the Tampa Bay Rays either would fall out of first place or inflate their payroll significantly...

P.S. Plus maybe this means more airtime for Warner since he'll be able to stick around for the whole show. Really, Warner made the right decision because Mike and Mike are just AWFUL.

On a lighter note, does anyone else think Fred Schneider should show up more often, BABY!?

Nice scoop CG.

I guess ESPN showed them! I bet from now Imus will never make fun of M&M again!

If the Rays want to drop out of #1, they will have to do the ultimate: hire Willie Randolph. The catch, of course, will be that they will hire him at 3 *PM*. :-)

Also, thanks for providing the context for the "offensive" comments. I heard his words, but at the time I couldn’t figure out the “offending” part! It just seemed like a standard Imus rant to me. So I assumed that he had said something really, really bad that I didn’t catch for some reason. But ESPN got angry over *those* two words? To quote Warner, “COME ON!”

Oh, well. At least Warner can now claim that he was asked to leave a job because of “pussy.”

A reader survey: Who is worse, Mike & Mike or Boomer & Carton?

God, watching this whole Imus/Warner/ESPN thing is like Daddy just hit Mommy at the dinner table. Pick up your forks and start eating again, kids. Warner rocks and we love him.

What's up with Imustruth's podcasts? I missed most of the shows from last week when he was back; I liked the podcasts. :(

I just saw a nice little teevee moment .... guess you could call it a confluence of sports and IITM.

There's a show on ESPN called Pardon The Interruption, or PTI for short. Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser host, with Tony Reali as resident wiseguy/factchecker. At the "end" of each episode, Tony goes over that day's "errors" with the hosts. Reali's on vacation this week, so the show brought back a kid who'd interned with them a year or so ago.

That kid ?

Luke Russert.

(To CG's survey - M&M, no question.)

I love Luke Russert. He's my age (and I believe CG's age, too, since all three of us graduated this year). I would love to see him follow in Daddy's footsteps (or even as a sports journalist), because he seems like a really swell guy.

Hey, is anyone going up to see Rob, Karith and Tony at Mohegan on August 16th? I'd love to see them, but I'm still undecided because it's a three-hour drive from NYC!

Awww, that's great to hear about Luke Russert. He seems like a great kid - I hope he goes far. I thought he did a masterful job at his dad's funeral. He's my age too. (Isn't it strange how Imus stuff shows up in the most random places...)

I totally want to go to Mohegan Sun, but I'm moving into my apartment on that day... :-( I really want to see them too.
