We All Shine On

In December of 1980, the world was stunned when John Lennon was killed in New York. Lennon - the ex-Beatle, symbol of the 1960s generation, and peace icon - was murdered in cold blood outside of his apartment.

On October 9, 1981 - what would have been Lennon’s 41st birthday - Imus in the Morning delivered a powerful tribute in his memory. I won't try to describe it; all I will say is that it will make you cry.

I realize that this is very sober material, but this clip demonstrates how good the show was when they pushed humor aside and dealt with serious issues.

college girl,
I'm having trouble opening whatever that file is, but I'm sure I heard it. I was living in Manhattan then and of course my alarm clock was the radio set to Imus - it was from him I first heard the news that sad morning. Imus was VERY upset. I was at the huge Central Park gathering that weekend too - you could hear a pin drop.

Probably shouldn't post this from the NY daily News on this serious thread, but, at least someone actually got a "comment" from Imus...

'Reached by e-mail at his New Mexico ranch, Imus declined to discuss his future plans, saying, "Ha ha....nice try" when a reporter pressed him for details.'

Imusfan, that's a really amazing story. I can't even imagine what it must have been like at the Central Park gathering. And it's incredible that you were in Manhattan when all of this happened.

If you want to listen to the tribute, try going to http://northeastairchecks.com/checks/imuslen81.ram

Or, if that doesn't work, try going to Northeastairchecks.com, search for Imus and John Lennon on the page. It's more than worth it to listen to.

College girl,
I was able to listen to it by downloading realplayer - which of course caused my work connection to go down but oh well.
Yes, it DID make me cry... nice find.

The funny thing was that after reading your blog this morning I went out for a run and the first song to pop up on my ipod was John Lennon sing "Mother" (from the Imagine soundtrack) - great song.

That's why this blog is SO terrific, imusfan...
She finds stuff about Imus that usually isn't posted anywhere else...

And to top it off, this blog is usually FIRST with breaking news about Imus...

I am from that age. On the day John Lennon was killed my wife and I were so stunned we were unable to speak. She not a big Beatles fan still new the impact all the songs John and Paul brought to the World and how they affected me. And though I don't remember that exact broadcast day 10/9/1981, I am sure I was listening in the car on the way to work. It brought chills to my body listening to it again.

You, College Girl, made a 58 year old man cry. Not a good thing before going to bed. Nevertheless I thank you.

Bruce from Florida
